The Fear of Life

  • The Fear of Life and The Simple Act of Inward Looking That Snuffs It Out
    If you will try, with your whole heart, to bring the beam of your attention in direct contact with the reality of your nature, you will snuff out the fear of life, which is the first cause of all human misery. I call this action "looking at yourself." If you will just try to look at yourself, the disease will go away, and with it the perception of your life as a problem to be solved, a threat to be destroyed, or the hiding place of a secret treasure that will bring fulfillment and satisfaction. It's that simple.

    We can see now the way forward to bring the miracle of inward looking to all of humanity. Our experience of our own lives has shown us directly what is possible for all human beings: an end to fearfulness and alienation from life that can easily be accomplished by anyone willing to try one simple act of inward looking. This is like nothing you have ever heard before; this is a revolution in the making for all of humanity.

A Worldwide Meeting - May 16, 2009

There seems to be some misunderstanding about what I do and about what I have to offer, so I thought I would take this opportunity to clear things up a little. It seems that I am thought of as a spiritual teacher, or a provider of satsang. I guess this is a natural mistake, since it is true that for the past ten years my work has consisted entirely in speaking with people who have a strong spiritual disposition about human misery and the end of human misery. And this has led many to assume that I am a spiritual teacher. But I am not a teacher of any sort.

A Worldwide Meeting - May 2, 2009

Whenever I suggest that you simply look at you, at the "you-ness" of you, at the simple, ordinary, always present reality of you, the fact is that I am always suggesting that you look at what has often been called "ego," or "I." Ego and I are the same thing. I don't see much value in speaking about ego as if it were some separate phenomenon that besets us and causes us difficulty, that we falsely identify with, and that is often seen as the devil itself. I don't see that there is much use in demonizing what is, after all, nothing other than a thought -- less than a thought -- by calling it by a name that, particularly in the west, is frought with an awful lot of negative connotation: ego. It is you I want you to look at. If that is what you think of as "ego," then that is what I want you to look at. The title of the podcast called "Grab Ego by the Throat" comes from my experience with an instruction and an encouragement that Ramana gave more than once in his discussions with people who were having difficulty, which was precisely that they should "grab ego by the throat," that they should hold on to it, not let go of it.
